Why join Pickleball?

Underhand serves makes it easy for everyone. Expect longer rallies and some exciting volleys.

Play area is smaller than tennis, so it's easier on the knees/joints.

Even when the ball is hit hard it does not go that far.

Very much a challenging sport, for speed, accuracy, and endurance.

Power and strength are not as important as strategy and thinking out your next move. Many times just stepping aside from a powerful return wins the point.

Almost any hard surface will work.

Precise court size is 20’ x 44’ which will fit in most backyards, school gyms, church halls, many clubs, parking lots, driveways, and so many other locations.

The equipment is very inexpensive. Did you know our club sells racquets? See the club coordinator if you are interested!

You can use a tennis net to start and weight it down at the centre with 1 gallon water jugs or lower the badminton nets to 36” on each end.

Rules and Expectations
When you arrive to play please:
-
Put your name on your racquet
-
Sign in on the attendance sheet
-
Wear a name tag - paper name tags are provided
-
Place your paddle in the appropriate line up and wait to play
-
Be attentive and ready to play when it's your turn
-
Follow the Flexible Skill Level System of Play
-
Check the notice board for announcements
Court Etiquette:
-
Call the score before serving.
-
If a ball from another court comes into your court shout "ball" and stop play. Return the ball to the proper court and then the team that served the ball should reserve.
-
If the ball hits the net post during play,the ball is considered out.
-
Use an underhand serve.
-
Avoid running onto or behind the court of other players
-
Be available to go on the court when your paddle 'marker' assigns you to the next available court.
-
Extra balls are shared in boxes between the nets. Remove all errant balls from the courts and place in the box.
-
All players like to improve. The better, more experienced players should occasionally make themselves available to play with or against the weaker, less experienced players. We are all in the same club.
-
Due to time constraints, at CLSA games are played until first team reaches 11 points
-
For safety and courtesy, entries and exits to the courts, during play, should be made through the North doors.
-
When play is completed and you are leaving the court be courteous to players still playing and ensure ample clearance behind the courts that are in play.
Courtesies to other players:
-
Refrain from swearing and offensive language
-
Wash your athletic clothes and avoid strong perfumes
-
Do not move the paddles of other players
-
Practice honesty and fair play in line calls
Ball Etiquette and Paddle Care:
-
When the ball needs to be returned to the server, the player closest to the ball should get it and send it to the server.
-
Send a ball to the server so that he/she can catch it easily with one hand. Advanced players should be able to get the ball to bounce once, softly, to the server, and most less advanced players should be able to make the ball bounce twice to ensure that it arrives at a low speed.

Never hit a ball hard toward the server's side. Aside from the possibility of hitting someone who's not expecting a ball to be coming, you'll also probably cause the ball to bounce off the wall and roll either too far away or into the court where it will become a hazard. Also, it is disrespectful to make the server pick a ball up off the ground when you could have sent it so that it could be caught after a bounce or two.

As an added bonus, when you don’t use your paddle as a "scoop” to pick up the ball or hit it along the ground - you are also being kind to your paddle. You want your pickleball paddles to last as long as possible.

Don’t leave it in extreme heat or cold especially in the car.

Keep it from getting wet such as from the rain or snow.
-
Don’t throw it, drag it, or bang it.
-
Don’t scrape it on the ground when picking up the ball.
-
Wipe it with a towel after every use.
-
Buy a cover and cover it when it is not in use.
-
Put a new grip on when the current grip is wearing off. Pickleball paddles get damaged when they slip out of someone’s hand.
Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Policy
Code of Conduct
All members and/or their guests will be expected to abide by the following:
-
Learn and play by the official rules of pickleball as set out by the USAPA.
-
Be a good sport – win with modesty and lose with dignity
-
Participate in Club play demonstrating good sportsmanship, respect, consideration and appreciation towards opponents, partners, officials, guests and staff of the facility.
-
Under no circumstances act in an intimidating manner or use any form of foul or abusive language or gestures.
-
Dress in safe and appropriate attire including proper non-marking footwear.
-
The Pickleball Club falls under the rules and policies of CLSA and infractions which contravene their policies will be subject to their disciplinary actions.
Failure to abide by the Code of Conduct may result in Disciplinary Measures (refer to Discipline Policy).
Discipline Policy
All members must uphold the CLSA Pickleball Club Code of Conduct Discipline Policy and must comply with all applicable and implied rules and regulations associated with the operation of The Club.
The CLSA Pickleball Club Executive may suspend a member for a period of time as they deem appropriate for one or more of the following reasons but not limited to:

if the member has failed to abide by the Code of Conduct

if the member has disrupted meetings or function
-
if the member has done anything harmful to the operation of The Club
The affected member shall receive:

a verbal warning
-
a written warning
-
a termination of membership effective immediately
The written document will describe the reason(s) why the Discipline Policy has been initiated. The decision of the Executive Committee is final. All Club financial matters concerning the individual(s) will be forfeited/cancelled immediately except for monies that are currently in arrears.
Club secretary will file all disciplinary actions with CLSA.

Senior Centres (Indoor Play)
To play pickleball at local Senior Centres participants must be 55 years of age and a member of the Centre (and the Pickleball Club where applicable). Four Senior Centres in Edmonton have pickleball courts with designated play times (Central Lions Seniors Association, South East Edmonton Seniors Association (SEESA), North Edmonton Seniors Association (NESA) and Westend Seniors Activity Centre).
